The series follows six friends living in Manhattan's Greenwich Village and their various relationships: Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) is a waitress and masseuse who has recently ended a relationship with her boyfriend Mike Hannigan. She meets his best friend Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) after he rescues her from her would-be date, Neil Perry, who was booing during the get-together because he did not know what everyone was saying. Phoebe dates Ross for seven years, and they get engaged twice. However, each time they break up because of Phoebe's inability to say "no. At the end of the series, Phoebe is dating another man, but is also "being a friend" to Ross. Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) is a spoiled latte-drinking lawyer and Ross' ex-girlfriend. She enlists Joey's help to prove that she did not get a promotion she has been wanting because her boss had a crush on her. Rachel then dates Joey for most of the show until they break up after Rachel tells him she does not love him anymore and starts dating again, this time with Ross. In the series finale, it shows flashbacks from previous episodes and Rachel getting married to Ross, but at the end it shows them breaking up after two years of marriage. Rachel's best friends are Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) and Phoebe Buffay. Monica is Rachel's younger sister. Monica is also engaged to Mike Hannigan, Rachel's ex-fiance, but they break up because he still has strong feelings for her. For most of the series she dates Joey Tribbiani, but they break up because she tells him that she does not love him anymore, then date Ross Geller to try to mend their friendship after Ross helped them out when they were scared of getting married by Miles (Ken Olin).
